Common Radon Myths in B.C.

Radon doesn't behave the way intuition suggests. A few of the most common misconceptions, addressed directly.

"My house is new, so I'm fine."

Newer homes aren't automatically safer. Tighter, more energy-efficient construction reduces natural air exchange, so if radon does get in, it has fewer ways to escape than in an older, draftier house.

"I'd notice if radon were a problem."

Radon has no smell, colour, or taste, and exposure causes no immediate symptoms. Testing, not how you feel, is the only reliable way to know your level.

"A safe test result is permanent."

Radon levels drift over months and years with weather, soil moisture, and changes to the home. Health Canada recommends retesting every 2–5 years even after a safe result.

Reading about radon is a start. Testing is the only way to know where your home actually stands.
